EU Weakens Climate Target Ahead of COP30

On the eve of the COP30 climate summit, EU member states reached a late-hour compromise to ease their 2040 emissions reduction goal. Instead of a strict 90% cut from 1990 levels, the deal allows for the purchase of foreign carbon credits, effectively reducing the domestic burden for some countries. Reuters Diplomatic sources indicate that the compromise reflects economic pressures in several nations, but EU officials maintain that the bloc’s long-term climate ambition remains intact, albeit with greater flexibility.
