US increases tariffs on Canada: trade tensions rise

US President Donald Trump announced a 10 % tariff increase on Canadian goods, following an anti-tariff TV advertisement sponsored by Ontario. This move escalates trade tensions between two nations that have historically maintained one of the most robust economic partnerships worldwide.
During the ASEAN summit in Malaysia, Trump declared he had no intention of meeting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, despite both attending the event. Meanwhile, Ontario has pledged to suspend the ad campaign in hopes of restarting trade talks.
The tariff increase comes at a moment of already strained Canada–US relations: Trump accused Canada of failing to curb fentanyl flow into the US and defended the use of tariffs. Washington is using economic pressure to prompt major concessions from Ottawa. The move threatens Canadian exporters, global supply chains, and the US reputation as a reliable economic ally. In summary, this tariff hike marks an unusual escalation in a previously stable trade relationship — the next few months will be decisive for the bilateral dialogue.
