Moldovan Government Discusses Expansion of BRM Trading Activities and New Market Opportunities
The Government of the Republic of Moldova has held a strategic meeting focused on expanding the trading activities of the Romanian Commodities Exchange (BRM) within the country. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu met with BRM President Gabriel Purice, who is visiting Chișinău. Discussions centered on BRM EST — the Moldovan subsidiary of BRM — and the potential diversification of exchange-traded products.
Prime Minister Munteanu praised BRM for its contribution to liberalizing Moldova’s natural gas market and strengthening the nation’s energy security. He emphasized that BRM EST has helped increase transparency, foster healthy competition and support Moldova’s strategic efforts to align with European energy practices.
According to data presented during the meeting, BRM EST recorded more than €650 million in transactions during its three years of operation in Moldova. These transactions covered natural gas, fuels, metals and construction materials. The total estimated contribution to the national budget stands at €52 million, including taxes, VAT and other fiscal obligations.
A major topic of discussion was BRM’s proposal to develop a balancing platform for the natural gas transmission system. Minister Junghietu expressed strong interest, noting that such a platform would:
-
align Moldova with regional best practices,
-
allow the use of transparent market indicators,
-
enhance competition,
-
improve efficiency and reliability in the gas sector.
The platform would operate according to EU standards and represent a key step toward Moldova’s further integration into Europe’s interconnected energy market.
Additionally, the parties explored the possibility of expanding BRM’s trading activities to new product categories, including economic sectors outside the energy field. This would involve implementing standardized electronic trading platforms, enabling a broader range of auctions — potentially transforming BRM EST into a central hub for commodity exchange in Moldova.
Currently, BRM EST acts as the operator of the wholesale natural gas market under a 10-year authorization from the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE). More than 35 market participants are registered on its platforms, representing energy suppliers, industrial operators and trading companies. During 2024–2025 alone, BRM facilitated the trading of over 130 million cubic meters of natural gas, reinforcing its role as a major player in Moldova’s energy marketplace.
The officials agreed to continue cooperation aimed at developing advanced exchange mechanisms and enhancing transparency across the market. Expanding trading to new product categories is seen as a strategic milestone that could significantly modernize Moldova’s economic structure and strengthen its competitiveness.
