Magnesium, the Key to Balancing Vitamin D Levels

A new study conducted by the Vanderbilt-Ingram Medical Center indicates that magnesium may be essential for maintaining adequate vitamin D levels in the body. Published in December in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study found that magnesium increases vitamin D in individuals with deficiency while decreasing levels in those with excess vitamin D. This discovery suggests a strong regulatory effect, potentially explaining why vitamin D supplements do not have the same efficacy for everyone.

Magnesium acts as a thermostat for vitamin D, elevating low levels and reducing excessive ones. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the ongoing debates regarding the relationship between vitamin D and colorectal cancer, as well as other diseases, given the mixed results of previous studies.

The study cohort consisted of 250 adults deemed at higher risk for colorectal cancer. Participants received either magnesium supplements or a placebo. The results suggest that magnesium deficiency could impact the production and metabolism of vitamin D. This underscores the importance of adequate magnesium intake, which is often overlooked compared to the recognized public health issue of vitamin D deficiency in the United States.

According to research, 80% of people do not consume enough magnesium, potentially exacerbating this issue. Rich dietary sources of magnesium include leafy green vegetables, beans, whole grains, and fatty fish.
