Dozens of EVM Wallets Compromised in Cyber Attack
Mysterious Attack on Cryptocurrency Wallets
Approximately "dozens" of cryptocurrency wallets on Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chains have been compromised, with small amounts being stolen from each victim, according to on-chain investigator ZachXBT. The losses are limited per wallet, with each victim losing less than $2,000. This activity has affected wallets across multiple EVM-compatible networks, suggesting a widespread incident rather than one confined to a single blockchain.
A fraudulent email disguised as legitimate communication from the Web3 wallet MetaMask may have facilitated this attack, cybersecurity researcher Vladimir S. noted. He emphasized that the attack appears to be automated, targeting a broad audience. Security expert Hackless cautioned users to revoke approvals for smart contracts and to continuously monitor their wallets.
The attacker may be linked to the Trust Wallet hack that occurred on December 25, resulting in losses of $7 million. Approximately 2,596 wallets were compromised during that incident. According to the Trust Wallet report, the attack was made possible due to a vulnerability affecting commonly used software packages in cryptocurrency projects.
It is essential for cryptocurrency holders to adopt online security measures to protect their funds and sensitive information from ever-evolving cyber threats.
