Yoweri Museveni Seeks Seventh Term as President of Uganda
Yoweri Museveni: From Rebel to President
Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, who has been in power since 1986, has announced his intention to run for a seventh term, despite criticism that this could turn Uganda into a family stronghold. Almost 80% of Uganda's population, which is under the age of 40, has known no other president but Museveni.
Over the years, the president has been praised for stabilizing the economy and developing infrastructure, but his critics accuse him of maintaining power by marginalizing the opposition and undermining independent institutions. In the past, Museveni has stated that he does not believe in limiting presidential terms, and in 2017, the age limit for presidential candidates was removed, raising suspicions about his intentions to remain in power indefinitely.
Critics have pointed out that Museveni has transformed Uganda into a place with a deteriorating democratic environment, where journalists and opponents frequently face reprisals. The nation has been a haven of peace for some, but a site of oppression for others. Museveni presents himself as a stabilizing leader who has brought peace and promoted foreign investment, yet questions remain about the future of democracy in Uganda with such a long-serving leader in power.
