Israeli Foreign Minister Makes Historic Visit to Somaliland
Gideon Saar Arrives in Somaliland
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, has landed in the autonomous region of Somaliland, marking the first official visit since Israel controversially recognized Somaliland's sovereignty. Saar arrived on Tuesday in the capital city of Hargeisa, where he met with Somaliland’s President, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, according to government sources.
Last month, Israel became the first country in the world to recognize Somaliland, which declared its independence from Somalia over 30 years ago. The President of Somaliland described this move as "a historic moment," while Somalia has vehemently rejected this development, considering it an assault on its sovereignty.
Although the Israeli Foreign Ministry did not publicly comment on Saar's visit, a diplomatic source from Somaliland stated that the purpose of the visit is to advance political and strategic partnerships. "Somaliland was not created last weekend. It has existed as a functional state for more than 34 years," Saar emphasized, adding that the attacks against Israel's recognition of Somaliland are hypocritical.
Israel's recognition of Somaliland has faced international criticism and prompted an emergency session of the UN Security Council. Countries such as China, Turkey, and the African Union have condemned this action, while the United States defended Israel, accusing critics of double standards.
