Israeli Foreign Minister's Historic Visit to Somaliland
Official Visit Following Recognition of Somaliland's Independence
In a diplomatic first, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has arrived in Somaliland, marking the highest-level visit following the region's recognition of independence just over a week ago. This visit has elicited a strong response, particularly from Somali authorities, who have labeled it an "unauthorized incursion" into their sovereign territory.
Saar was received by government officials upon his arrival at Hargeisa airport and is expected to meet with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the visit, emphasizing that any official activity without Mogadishu's consent is "illegal." Meanwhile, the African Union has summoned an emergency session to discuss the implications of this recognition.
Diplomats from Somaliland describe Saar's visit as a "defining moment" for the relationship between the two nations, highlighting the significance of the diplomatic partnership. They assert that the official recognition by Israel on December 26 represents a critical step in strengthening Somaliland's foreign relations.
Though Somaliland has claimed independence since 1991, Somalia has consistently contested the legitimacy of this status. Recently, many Somalis have taken to the streets to call for national unity and have condemned the conditions that Somalia claims Somaliland accepted in exchange for recognition by Israel.
Preparations for a broader regional alliance continue, with Saudi Arabia and Turkey emphasizing the importance of Somalia's territorial integrity. In this tense context, regional leaders remain vigilant regarding the potential threats posed by Israel's presence in Somaliland.
