Algeria Claims Dramatic Victory Over DR Congo
Algeria Faces Nigeria in AFCON 2025 Quarterfinals
A powerful strike by Adil Boulbina, who came on as a substitute, decided a tense match as Algeria defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stage. The game, held at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, was heading towards penalties when, in the 119th minute, Boulbina, a forward playing in Qatar, penetrated the area from the left and scored with a fierce shot into the net.
This magical moment sparked jubilant celebrations in the stadium, with most of the 18,837 spectators supporting Algeria. The 2019 champions, who won all their group matches, appear to be serious contenders for a third continental title, but they are now preparing for a thrilling duel against Nigeria, led by Victor Osimhen, on Saturday in Marrakech.
This is a disaster for the Congolese team, who arrived at AFCON with high ambitions and were hoping for another showdown with Nigeria, after defeating the Super Eagles in penalties during the World Cup qualifier last November. The Leopards can at least console themselves with the thought of an intercontinental playoff in March, where a victory against a team from New Caledonia or Jamaica would secure their spot in the first World Cup since 1974.
Having already secured their place in the finals in North America, Algeria remains focused on their journey throughout the competition in Morocco.
