Life of a Young Person Without Official Documents

Arnold Ncube, a 25-year-old South African, has been confronted with a challenging life due to the absence of a birth certificate. Born in Johannesburg, he has been unable to prove his nationality, severely impacting his education and job opportunities. Without identity documents, he washes cars in Thembisa to survive.

The Challenges of Statelessness

Arnold explains, "It’s a painful experience. You are practically invisible. You do not exist. You live in the shadows, without a bank account or the chance to access decent employment." Statelessness affects an estimated 10,000 people in South Africa who, despite being born here, struggle to prove their nationality.

The Role of Organizations and Lawyers

Christy Chitengu, a lawyer who was once stateless herself, obtained South African citizenship with the help of the organization "Lawyers for Human Rights." She emphasizes that statelessness is not just a legal issue but a matter of respecting fundamental rights and human dignity. "Citizenship is not a reward, but a right," affirms Christy.

A Hope for a Better Future?

After years of hardship, Arnold is now working with a lawyer to help him secure the necessary documents. He hopes that once he has these documents, he will be able to return to school to study computer science and thus secure a better future.
