Significant Releases in Venezuela

Venezuela has released a "large number" of high-profile political prisoners, including several foreign nationals, in an apparent concession to the United States, just days after their forces kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Thursday's releases are the first since the appointment of Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro's former deputy, who has garnered support from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed satisfaction with her governance as long as she provides Washington access to the country's oil resources.

Details of the Releases

Among those released was former opposition candidate Enrique Marquez, who contested the controversial 2024 presidential elections. "Everything is over now," Marquez stated in a video filmed by a local journalist, alongside his wife and another released opposition member, Biagio Pilieri. Delcy Rodriguez's brother, Jorge Rodriguez, the parliament speaker, claimed that "a large number of Venezuelan and foreign citizens" were urgently released to ensure "peaceful coexistence".

International Context and Reactions

The Venezuelan opposition welcomed the releases, with leader Maria Corina Machado declaring, "Injustice will not last forever and... the truth, though wounded, will find its way." Notable Venezuelan-Spanish activist Rocio San Miguel was also among the five Spanish citizens released after being arrested in February 2024, accused of an alleged plot to assassinate Maduro. The White House credited Trump for the prisoners' freedom, stating that he is using "maximum leverage" to act in the interest of both the American and Venezuelan people.

Threats and Future Plans

Maduro was captured in a special forces operation earlier in January, resulting in the deaths of 100 individuals. Trump has indicated that the United States plans to "manage" Venezuela for a transitional period and exploit its oil reserves for years to come. Additionally, Trump announced a plan to sell between 30 to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, with Caracas using the proceeds to purchase U.S.-made goods. Trump is set to meet with oil executives on Friday and will also meet with opposition leader Machado next week.
