Innovation in RF Testing

A Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) is an essential, multi-talented equipment for RF testing. These devices are now available at affordable prices, but professional models can still cost exorbitant amounts. Consequently, an older VNA priced a few hundred euros on eBay becomes an attractive choice. Recently, [W3AXL] acquired an HP 8714C model, a gem from the technology of the '90s, equipped with a floppy disk drive and a green CRT screen. He now aims to upgrade the device by replacing the screen with a color LCD monitor!

In the two videos below, posted a year apart, we see the modernization process. The first video illustrates the removal of the CRT module and the safe extraction of its electronic components, followed by the creation of a frame for the LCD. The second video focuses on extracting the VGA signal from the VNA and directing it to the new module. The build quality of this testing equipment is impressive; it is not only robust but also well-designed for maintenance and disassembly.

[W3AXL] chose to leave the RF section untouched, but the CRT modules and the motherboard can be easily removed with just a few screws. Additionally, he developed an improved display support, adapting to the shape of the CRT on the front panel. The result is a color screen on the instrument, which also becomes much easier to use.

If you are not familiar with VNAs, it may be helpful to learn more about them!
