Young Hiker Dies After Fall from Mount Baldy in California
Tragedy on Mount Baldy
A 19-year-old hiker, Marcus Alexander Muench Casanova, has been identified as the victim of a fall of approximately 150 meters on Mount Baldy in California, known for being one of the most dangerous peaks in the southern part of the state. According to authorities in San Bernardino County, search teams discovered his body during a rescue operation.
Casanova was with a friend on December 29 when the friend managed to call for help following the young man's fall. The friend had to move away from the accident site to find phone signal and provided GPS coordinates to the rescue teams. Fortunately, he escaped unharmed.
Due to strong winds hampering helicopter recovery efforts on Monday, rescue teams were able to retrieve the bodies on Tuesday. The sheriff’s office stated that they had rescued five other climbers from the mountain in the past five days.
Casanova's family expressed their devastation over his loss, describing him as a “navigator and nature lover.” Mount Baldy, officially known as Mount San Antonio, stands at an elevation of 3,068 meters and has been the site of over 14 deaths since 2020, including that of British actor Julian Sands in January 2023.
The proximity to Los Angeles makes Mount Baldy a popular destination for both experienced and novice climbers, and authorities recommend avoiding the mountain, especially in unpredictable weather conditions. “It is one of the most dangerous trails in the area,” stated Jenny Smith, spokesperson for the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office.
Mountain trails will be temporarily closed until the beginning of the new year after these tragedies and repeated rescue interventions.
