Tragic Incident in Hebron

A Palestinian man has died from gunshot wounds after Israeli forces opened fire on his vehicle in Hebron, amid escalating violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, as Israel's brutal campaign against Gaza shows no signs of abating. Shaker Falah al-Jaabari, aged 58, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning after being shot the night before in eastern Hebron, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Raids in Nablus and Jerusalem

The Israeli army stated that its forces fired upon a vehicle that accelerated towards soldiers in the Haret al-Sheikh neighborhood; however, in a subsequent statement, the army acknowledged that an initial review did not find evidence that the incident was an intentional attack. Israeli authorities confiscated his body after the shooting, reported the Palestinian news agency Wafa. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society indicated that its crew was prevented from reaching the man.

The killing occurred while Israeli forces besieged a house in the Old City of Nablus on Sunday, with undercover teams infiltrating neighborhoods before military vehicles invaded the city from multiple directions. Two Palestinians were arrested during the raids, according to Palestinian security sources cited by Wafa. In a separate incident, Israeli forces conducted raids at a Palestinian wedding in occupied East Jerusalem, firing shots at participants and using stun grenades. Several men were arrested, including the groom, as images showed soldiers inside the hall and security forces throwing stun grenades while guests were forced outside.

Alarming Statistics

The escalation of violence comes against a backdrop of alarming findings from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which reported that 240 Palestinians have been killed in the occupied West Bank in 2025, including 55 children. The year has also seen over 1,800 attacks by settlers, the highest number since the United Nations began recording such incidents in 2006. Additionally, more than 1,190 Palestinians have been injured in these attacks, with 838 injured directly by Israeli settlers.

UN Report and Expansion of Settlements

The violence coincides with a marked UN report on human rights, labeling Israeli policies as akin to apartheid. Volker Turk urged Israel to "demolish all settlements," describing a "systematic suffocation of Palestinian rights in the West Bank." Just hours after the report's release, Israel cleared the last hurdle for the controversial E1 settlement project near Jerusalem. A government tender published on Tuesday seeks developers for 3,401 housing units on land that critics say would effectively divide the West Bank and impede the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state. Initial construction could begin within weeks, according to the anti-settlement group Peace Now.

Impact on Palestinian Communities

Al Jazeera correspondent Nida Ibrahim, reporting from a Bedouin camp in Ras al-Auja, which is being demolished by Israeli orders, described it as "one of the largest herding communities in the West Bank." She noted that 26 families have already left the area, with another 20 preparing to leave, uncertain of where they will relocate. Over half a million Israeli settlers now live in settlements in the West Bank, deemed illegal under international law. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli attacks have killed over 1,100 Palestinians in the West Bank and arrested approximately 21,000 individuals during this period.
