Newlywed Couple Killed in Gas Cylinder Explosion in Pakistan
Tragedy in Islamabad
A newly married couple was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at their home in Islamabad, where they were resting after their wedding reception, according to police reports. The explosion also claimed the lives of six others, including guests and family members, while more than a dozen individuals sustained injuries.
The blast occurred at 7:00 AM local time, causing the roof to collapse. Sections of the walls were destroyed, leaving piles of debris, large concrete slabs, and scattered furniture across the floor. Rescue teams had to extricate the injured from the rubble.
Investigators and emergency authorities have indicated that the explosion was triggered by a gas leak that filled the room before detonating. Three neighboring houses were also damaged in the incident. Pakistan's Senate President, Yusuf Raza Gilani, described the event as “a heartbreaking tragedy that turned celebrations into mourning.”
Hanif Masih, the groom's father, recounted that his son had married just the day prior. The couple, along with family members and guests, were asleep at the time of the blast. Masih stated that everyone had gone to bed around 3:00 AM and awoke to devastation. Alongside his son, his daughter-in-law, wife, and sister-in-law also perished in the explosion.
The police have cordoned off the area and are investigating the explosion's circumstances, while forensic officers have been sent to examine the debris. Deputy Police Commissioner Sahibzada Yousaf noted that search dogs and advanced technology were employed to ensure that all trapped individuals were rescued.
Many households in Pakistan use liquefied gas cylinders for heating and cooking, with these cylinders being linked to other fatal accidents stemming from leaks. Gilani expressed concern over the explosion, stating that more must be done to reduce the “unsafe use of gas cylinders.” He emphasized that such incidents require relevant departments to perform their responsibilities diligently and implement safety measures in a press release.
