French Researcher Laurent Vinatier Returns Home After Prisoner Exchange with Russia
Laurent Vinatier, French Researcher, Returns Home
A French researcher serving a three-year sentence in Russia has been released in a prisoner exchange, according to official announcements from both France and Russia. President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that Laurent Vinatier, arrested for violating Russian laws concerning "foreign agents," is now "free and back in France."
Macron expressed relief at the news of Vinatier's release and thanked diplomats for their mobilization efforts. The Russian security service, FSB, announced that the 49-year-old researcher was exchanged for Daniil Kasatkin, a basketball player arrested in France, who is wanted by the United States for his alleged involvement in ransomware attacks.
Vinatier was arrested in June 2024 and sentenced four months later for failing to register as a "foreign agent." While in prison, he faced further investigation for espionage, accused of gathering sensitive military information for Russia. The FSB stated that the case against him was dismissed due to his "active remorse."
Near the end of his trial, Vinatier acknowledged his love for Russia and apologized for his legal violations, even reciting a verse from Alexander Pushkin. His attorney, Frédéric Belot, described the decision for his release as a "huge relief," expressing happiness that it coincided with Orthodox Christmas.
Relations between France and Russia have been tense since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, although Macron has expressed a desire to engage in dialogue with Russia to end the conflict.
