Critical Infrastructure Hit by Drone Attacks

Ukrainian officials are rushing to restore power in the southeast of the country following significant Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands in darkness amid winter. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the nighttime assaults aim to "tear apart" the nation by cutting "electricity, heat, and water supply" in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Repair teams are working tirelessly to restore services in the latter region.

Zelenskyy called on allies to respond to Russia's "deliberate torture" of Ukraine. "There is no military rationale for such attacks on the energy sector and infrastructure that leaves people without electricity and heat during winter," he remarked. This winter, Russia has intensified strikes on Ukrainian energy sites, which, according to Kyiv and its allies, represents a deliberate strategy to weaken the civilian population, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion.

Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba reported that over 1 million people in the industrial Dnipropetrovsk region have been affected. Furthermore, military director Vladyslav Gaivanenko mentioned that critical energy infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk has been damaged. The Ministry of Energy reported that nearly 800,000 individuals in the region are without power. Eight miners faced power outages, but workers were successfully evacuated.

Ivan Fedorov, governor of Zaporizhzhia, highlighted that it was the first time in recent years that his region experienced a total blackout but emphasized that officials reacted promptly. "A difficult night for the region. But 'light' always prevails," he wrote on Telegram. Audrey MacAlpine from Al Jazeera reported that not only energy has been affected, but also the emergency air raid alarm system has become functional.

The Ukrainian air forces stated that Russia launched 97 drones, 70 of which were shot down by Ukrainian air defense systems, while 27 hit various locations. Simultaneously, Ukraine has responded to ongoing attacks on its energy network with its own strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries, aiming to disrupt Moscow's essential energy exports.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that Moscow would consider any presence of foreign troops in Ukraine as "legitimate military targets for the Armed Forces of Russia." This statement followed the agreement among Ukraine's allies regarding crucial security guarantees for Kyiv at a recent summit in Paris.
