U.S. Military Intervention in Venezuela: A Threat to the Entire Region

President Donald Trump proudly showcased the "success" of a massive regime change operation in Venezuela, posting an image of President Nicolas Maduro in handcuffs. He commended the military for "one of the most impressive displays of American military power" in history, claiming that Venezuelan forces are now "powerless". Trump announced that Maduro and his wife will be indicted in New York for "narcoterrorism" and asserted, without evidence, that U.S. operations had reduced maritime drug trafficking by 97%.
Trump stated that the U.S. will "administer the country" until a transition can be organized, openly threatening a "second and much larger attack". Crucially, he framed these claims within a broader assertion of "U.S. dominance over the Western Hemisphere".
The U.S. military intervention in Venezuela represents something much more perilous than a mere act of aggression; it manifests a historical pattern of intervention that has left Latin America scarred. The regime change operation in Caracas is a clear indication that the Trump administration embraces this historic policy of interventionism with renewed vigor. This has severe implications for the region.
Even the fact that this attack targets Maduro's repressive and corrupt government, responsible for the immense suffering of many Venezuelans, does not make the situation any less catastrophic. Washington's long history of supporting brutal dictators in the region undermines any claim to moral authority.
In conclusion, the American military intervention in Venezuela reinforces a catastrophic pattern of international law violations. If the U.S. can unilaterally launch military attacks against sovereign nations, then the entire framework of international law becomes meaningless.
