Trump Emphasizes the Importance of Greenland for US National Security

President Donald Trump stated that the United States must "own" Greenland to prevent Russia and China from expanding their influence in the region. "Countries must have property and protect that property, not defend lease agreements. We will have to defend Greenland," Trump told reporters in response to a question from the BBC.

Recently, the White House indicated that the administration is considering purchasing the semi-autonomous territory from Denmark, but did not exclude the option of annexing it by force. However, both Denmark and Greenland have asserted that the territory is not for sale.

In a joint statement, leaders of political parties in Greenland, including those from the opposition, reiterated that "the US disregard for our country must stop." They expressed a desire to remain Greenlanders and leave the future of Greenland in the hands of its own people.

Although Greenland is the least densely populated region, its location between North America and the Arctic makes it ideal for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring ships in the area. Trump stated that Greenland is essential for US national security, claiming without evidence that it is "full of Russian and Chinese ships."

Currently, the US has over 100 military personnel permanently stationed at the Pituffik base in the northwestern corner of Greenland, a facility operated by the US since World War II. These troops can be supplemented in Greenland upon request, according to existing agreements with Denmark.

Trump emphasized that a lease agreement is not sufficient. "Countries cannot make agreements for nine years or 100 years. They must have property," he added. The American leader remarked that he appreciates the Chinese and Russians but does not desire them to become hypothetical neighbors in Greenland.

NATO allies responded by stating that only Denmark and Greenland can decide their own relations. They emphasized that Arctic security is a common priority and that decisions must be made collectively.

Concerns about Greenland's future have been heightened by Trump's military actions against Venezuela, while the growing interest in Greenland's natural resources, including rare minerals and potential oil and gas reserves, has rekindled discussions about the fate of the region.
