Trump Confirms Long-term U.S. Involvement in Venezuela

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that his country’s involvement in Venezuela could continue for years. In an interview with the New York Times, Trump expressed that "only time will tell" how long his administration will "oversee" the leadership of the South American nation, following the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro by American forces in a raid on Saturday.

Trump did not specify if or when elections would occur in Venezuela to replace the interim government headed by Maduro supporter Delcy Rodríguez. Meanwhile, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado claimed that Maduro's ousting has triggered an "irreversible process" that will lead Venezuela towards "freedom".

New York Times reporters questioned Trump about his plans for Venezuela's future just days after he stated that his administration would govern the oil-rich nation. Previously, the White House announced that the United States would control sanctioned oil sales "indefinitely".

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright argued that the country needs control over Venezuela's oil sales to exert influence over the interim government in Caracas. Trump emphasized that his administration would "take oil" from Venezuela, which possesses the largest proven reserves in the world, but acknowledged that it will take time for the country's oil industry to be revived.

Venezuela's oil production has dramatically declined due to mismanagement by Maduro's government and his predecessor, as well as years of sanctions imposed by the United States. Trump noted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been "in constant communication" with Rodríguez, stating that she "provides us with everything we deem necessary".

Despite expectations, Trump expressed skepticism about Machado, asserting that she lacks the "respect" and necessary support to lead Venezuela. Machado, who has united opposition groups ahead of the presidential elections in 2024, has been hindered from running by officials loyal to Maduro.

In an interview with a Venezuelan opposition news site, Machado insisted that Maduro's ousting has set the country on an irreversible path to freedom. She stated that she hopes this new phase of the transition process will be "as short and swift as possible" and called for the release of political prisoners.

Trump stated that "we will rebuild Venezuela in a very profitable way," and he will discuss these plans with representatives from the largest oil companies in the U.S. Meanwhile, the American Senate has voted to consider a resolution aimed at blocking the Trump administration from deploying additional military actions in Venezuela.
