Donald Trump Announces Capture of Nicolás Maduro

Donald Trump has declared that American forces have captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro following large-scale attacks in Venezuela. The American president stated on social media that Maduro and his wife, First Lady Cilia Flores, were transported out of the country. Later, he mentioned on Fox and Friends that they are aboard a ship headed for New York.

Reaction from the Venezuelan Government

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino asserted that the armed forces will defend the country's sovereignty. The attacks inside Venezuela follow a campaign of pressure from the U.S. against Maduro's government, which the Trump administration accuses of flooding the United States with drugs and gang members.

Trump's Motivations

Trump blames Maduro for the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants in the U.S., part of the nearly eight million Venezuelans who have fled due to the economic crisis and repression in the country. Without providing evidence, Trump accused the Venezuelan government of “emptying prisons and insane asylums” and “forcing” inmates to emigrate to the U.S.

American Military Strategy

American inspections in Venezuela have increased since the beginning of Trump's presidency, targeting vessels suspected of drug trafficking. To date, there have been over 30 attacks on such vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, resulting in more than 110 deaths.

Impact on the Population and Oil Industry

Venezuela, which holds the world's largest proven oil reserves, has suffered due to sanctions and a lack of investment. While Trump has emphasized efforts to gain control over Venezuela's oil resources, U.S. officials deny this, stating that their actions aim to combat drug trafficking and protect national security.
