Tesla Struggles to Maintain Dominance in Electric Vehicle Market

Tesla has lost its title as the largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in the world, reporting a drastic sales decline in the fourth quarter, with sales dropping by 16% to 418,000 vehicles. Chinese company BYD has taken the lead, selling 2.26 million electric vehicles globally in 2025, marking a 28% increase from the previous year.

The sales plunge was triggered by the removal of the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles in September, which resulted in a frenzy of purchases in the third quarter, depleting year-end sales. Additionally, Tesla's product range has come to be seen as outdated; the Model Y has not received major updates since its launch in 2020, and the Cybertruck only delivered 11,642 units in the fourth quarter, despite an initial promise to sell over 200,000 units annually.

Despite the stagnation in sales, investor confidence on Wall Street remains untouched, with Tesla's shares remaining close to historic highs. Investors seem to be betting more on Elon Musk's vision, which includes robotaxis and humanoid robots, rather than on actual vehicle sales. Moreover, the company has quietly abandoned its ambitious goal of selling 20 million vehicles by 2030.
