RDC Exits Africa Cup of Nations 2025, but Mboladinga Remains a Symbol

The Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) has exited the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 after a dramatic extra-time defeat against Algeria. However, its most famous supporter, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, has left an indelible mark on both fans and football players alike. Mboladinga, who quickly became a fan favorite and a social media sensation for his unique tribute to national hero Patrice Lumumba, bid farewell to AFCON after meeting the Algerian team at their hotel on Wednesday. He stood out among thousands of RDC supporters by remaining motionless with his right arm raised during all of his team's matches in the tournament.

"The supporter who went viral for his still posture throughout the match has become a symbol of pride, memory, and resilience for AFCON," wrote a fan in a tribute on X. At the beginning of each match, Mboladinga would ascend to a pedestal and adopt that posture, mimicking a memorial statue of Lumumba in Kinshasa, RDC. However, when his team was eliminated from the tournament by Algeria through a goal scored in the 119th minute by Adil Boulbina, he was deeply saddened. Known as 'Lumumba Vea' by many in RDC, Mboladinga removed his glasses, wiped away his tears, and for his final act, fell into the crowd at the end of his team's match.

Moreover, he appeared to be the target of irony from Algerian player Mohamed Amoura, who approached the Congolese supporters' section, imitated the supporter’s posture, and fell onto the field in celebration. Amoura's gesture was widely criticized on social media, with fans demanding that he apologize to Mboladinga and the Congolese nation. "He [Mboladinga] brings visibility to a historical figure who fought for the independence of Congo and stood in solidarity with the Algerian revolution against occupation," wrote sports journalist Leyla Hamed. The Algerian player later posted an apology on social media, stating that he was unaware of the significance and history behind the RDC supporter's gesture. "I just wanted to joke around in a friendly way, with no ill intent," he wrote. "I respect Congo and its team." To further make amends, the Algerian Football Federation invited Mboladinga to the team’s hotel on Wednesday. He met the players and received a personalized Algeria jersey with Lumumba’s name printed on the back.

The RDC is currently ranked 56th in the FIFA world rankings and has a chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup through a place in the inter-confederation playoff final scheduled for March 31.
