Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement

The Trump administration has announced that the United States will withdraw from 66 international organizations, including 31 United Nations entities and 35 non-UN organizations. These organizations focus on issues such as climate, labor, migration, and other topics deemed by the Trump administration as "woke" initiatives that are "contrary to the interests of the United States."

List of UN Organizations

Among the 31 UN organizations listed are:

  • Department of Economic and Social Affairs
  • United Nations Economic and Social Council
  • Economic Commission for Africa
  • Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
  • Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia
  • International Law Commission
  • International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals
  • International Trade Centre
  • Office of the Special Advisor on Africa
  • Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict
  • Peacebuilding Fund
  • United Nations Environment Programme
  • UN Initiative on Carbon Emissions

The withdrawal will take effect on January 27, 2026, at which point the U.S. will no longer be bound by carbon emissions reduction commitments outlined in the agreement.

Impact of the Withdrawal

The administration also intends to withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a crucial treaty for international climate negotiations. This action is expected to generate legal challenges given that it is a treaty ratified by the Senate.

Non-UN Organizations

Among the 35 non-UN organizations are:

  • Forum for European Cooperation
  • Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research
  • International Renewable Energy Alliance
  • International Human Rights Commission
  • International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance

Even after these withdrawals, the U.S. will remain an active member of the UN Security Council and other vital bodies for security and humanitarian assistance.
