Preliminary Investigations Suggest a Tragic Cause

Preliminary investigations indicate that sparklers attached to champagne bottles may have triggered the devastating fire that engulfed a bar in the mountain resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve, resulting in the deaths of over 40 individuals, local prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud stated at a press conference on Friday.

"Everything suggests that the fire started from the lit candles or 'sparklers' that had been affixed to the champagne bottles," Pilloud said. These came too close to the ceiling, causing a rapid and extensive conflagration.

At least 40 people have died and 119 were injured in the blaze, which broke out at the crowded Le Constellation bar in the early hours of Thursday. The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of grief among locals, tourists, and survivors, many of whom are seeking information about missing friends and family members.

"There is a real sadness on the faces of so many people," reported Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull, describing the city as a "place of collective mourning." Meanwhile, families are anxiously awaiting news, and Swiss officials have announced that 113 of the 119 injured individuals have been identified.

Authorities have indicated that approximately 50 people will be transferred to other European countries for treatment in specialized burn units.

Investigations are ongoing, and the bar's owners have been questioned regarding possible negligence that may have led to the tragedy. This will include the examination of previous renovations and fire suppression systems, as well as the number of people present in the bar at the time the fire broke out.
