New Syrian Currency Aims to Revitalize the Economy

The new banknotes have arrived at exchange houses in Syria, replacing those that featured the former leader, Bashar al-Assad, and his family. This move comes as the new government hopes to recover some of the lost value of the Syrian pound, which has been adversely affected by over a decade of war. The design of the new banknotes has been in preparation for months and is part of a broader effort to stabilize and rejuvenate the economy.

Removal of Assad's Image and Currency Redenomination

The value of the Syrian pound has been severely impacted, with inflation recently reaching triple digits. By the end of 2025, an anonymous official told Reuters that the Central Bank of Syria had only $200 million in foreign reserves, compared to $17 billion in 2010. Improving the status of the Syrian pound presents one of the greatest challenges for the new Syrian authorities.

National Symbols and New Denominations

The new banknotes, featuring denominations between 10 and 500 Syrian pounds, display agricultural symbols representative of Syria, such as roses, wheat, and olives. Residents of Damascus have expressed joy over this change, deeming the presence of Assad's image on banknotes as ridiculous.

Prospects for the Syrian Economy

Despite the removal of the images from the old banknotes, the value of the currency remains unchanged. The United States has lifted some sanctions, facilitating the return of investments to Syria. Additionally, Gulf Arab states, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have made significant financial investments, providing a new economic impetus for the country.
