Republican Senators Oppose President Trump on Fed Chair Allegations
Support to Block Trump's Fed Nominations
American Senator Lisa Murkowski has expressed her support for fellow Republican Thom Tillis's plan to block President Donald Trump's nominations for the leadership of the Federal Reserve, following threats of allegations against Fed Chairman Jerome Powell from the Department of Justice. "The risks are too great to ignore this situation: if the Federal Reserve loses its independence, the stability of our markets and the economy as a whole will suffer," Murkowski stated on social media platform X.
Public Pressure on the Fed
Murkowski is among the few Republicans showing the willingness to vote against the president’s wishes in the U.S. Senate, where his party holds a 53-47 majority. Since returning to office last year, Trump has made increasingly forceful public appeals for the Fed to cut interest rates, thus violating the practice of keeping the central bank insulated from political pressure.
Threats Under Scrutiny
The senator noted that she had previously discussed with Powell, who indicated that the Fed received subpoenas last week, which he termed as "pretexts" meant to influence interest rate-setting policy, rather than Trump's desires. Murkowski labeled the Justice Department's threats as "nothing more than an attempt at coercion."
Criticism from Former Officials
Former Federal Reserve chairs, Janet Yellen, Ben Bernanke, and Alan Greenspan, also condemned the administrative investigation into Powell, comparing it to interference seen in other emerging countries with weak institutions. "This is an unprecedented attempt to use legal attacks to undermine the independence of the central bank," they emphasized in a joint statement.
