Restoration of an Old Vise Brings It Back to Modernity
A Project Inspired by Passion
It is often said that tools are no longer made like they used to be, and while this is not always true, it is certain that old tools rarely disappear. This is the case of an old vise that [Marius Hornberger] decided to restore, giving it a new lease on life.
A Careful Restoration Process
The restoration of old tools often begins with the cleaning of layers of oil and damaged paint. Each layer has its own story, but Marius chose to create new memories through the care he invested in renovating this vise. The clamping mechanisms were worn out and required replacements, but Marius wanted to do more than just replace them. He completely rethought the clamping mechanism, providing a much smoother operation.
Innovation and Improvement
The improvement process included machining new axial bearings, designing and 3D printing a housing for the bearings, machining the main shaft, and finally, creating a customized shell. The final step involved applying a fresh coat of paint and a new layer of oil. This project not only revives an old tool but also pays tribute to traditional craftsmanship.
An Example of Sustainability
Restoring old tools is a perfect example of sustainability, highlighting the idea that tools can have a new life even after years of use. [Marius] encourages us to consider the potential of our old tools, showing that all it takes is a bit of creativity and a willingness to work.
