The Ongoing Strife

On January 11, Russian forces conducted artillery and drone strikes on the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine, resulting in the death of a 68-year-old man and injuries to three others, causing fires in residential buildings, according to the Ukrainian emergency service. Additionally, Russian bombardments claimed another life in the Kramatorsk district of Donetsk region. Governor Vadym Filashkin reported that three more individuals were killed and nine were injured in Russian attacks on the areas of Yarova, Kostyanynivka, and Sloviansk in Donetsk.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported 139 combat clashes and noted that Russia executed 33 air attacks, deployed over 4,430 drones, and carried out 2,830 strikes against Ukrainian troops and settlements. Russian forces advanced near the villages of Markove and Kleban-Byk in Donetsk region, according to the battlefield monitoring site DeepState, though no significant changes were reported.

Infrastructure Restoration in Kyiv

In Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, engineers are working "around the clock" to restore electricity supply after thousands of apartments were left powerless following Russian attacks on Thursday, stated Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko added that heat supplies have been restored to about half of the affected homes.

The Russian news agency TASS reported that two individuals were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Voronezh in southwestern Russia. The governor of the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, mentioned that 600,000 residents in the area are without electricity, heat, or water due to a Ukrainian missile strike.

Politics and Diplomacy

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on January 12 to address Russia's "flagrant violations of the UN Charter," after it launched a hypersonic missile, Oreshnik, near the Polish border, stated Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. He also emphasized that "Iran's support for Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine and the oppression of its own citizens is part of the same policy of violence and disregard for human dignity."

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, insisted that Russia will not accept European or NATO troops in Ukraine, adding that "European idiots want a war in Europe." The Institute for the Study of War noted that Russia's Oreshnik attack was likely intended to intimidate Western countries into withholding military support for Ukraine.
