Violent Protests Erupt in Iran Over Cost of Living
At Least Five Dead in Demonstrations
At least five individuals have been killed as demonstrations against the rising cost of living in Iran have spread across various regions of the country. According to the semi-official Fars news agency, three people were killed and 17 were injured in protests in the city of Azna, located about 300 km southwest of Tehran.
Videos shared online showed objects burning in the streets and gunfire, as protesters shouted, "Shameless! Shameless!" Additionally, it was reported that two individuals were killed in protests in the city of Lordegan, approximately 470 km south of Tehran.
Protests have also occurred in other cities, with one security force member killed in the city of Kouhdasht while carrying out duties to maintain public order.
Discontent erupted after local merchants began protests against the government's handling of currency depreciation and the rapid rise in prices. Iran is facing an inflation rate of 40% and severe international sanctions, and the economic situation is becoming increasingly precarious.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged the protesters' "legitimate demands" and called on the government to take action to improve the economic situation. Meanwhile, authorities have committed to maintaining a firm stance and have warned that any attempt to transform economic protests into instability will receive a legal and decisive response.
