Doctors Report Overwhelmed Hospitals Amid Ongoing Protests in Iran
Protests in Iran
As protests in Iran enter their second week, hospitals across the country are facing an influx of injured individuals. Doctors from two hospitals reported to the BBC that their facilities have been overwhelmed by the high number of patients seeking care. One doctor stated that an eye hospital in Tehran has gone into crisis mode, while another physician indicated that there are insufficient surgical teams to handle the volume of incoming cases.
On the same day, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that Iran is in "great trouble" and warned that "they should not start shooting, as we will respond in kind." In a letter to the UN Security Council, Iran accused the U.S. of turning the protests into "violent subversive acts and widespread vandalism."
Anti-government protests have erupted in numerous cities, with reports indicating at least 50 demonstrators have been killed according to two human rights groups. Additionally, over 2,300 individuals have been arrested.
The UN Secretary-General expressed concern over the loss of life and emphasized the right to peaceful protests, while international leaders called for this right to be upheld. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, remains defiant, asserting that the Islamic Republic will not be intimidated.
