Receiving the Presidency of Oxford Union


In December 2025, I was elected president of the Oxford Union, the renowned debating society, becoming the first Palestinian woman to hold this position in the 203-year history of the institution. I won the presidency by a significant margin in an election that saw much higher participation than recent competitions.


How Identity Influenced the Campaign


Throughout my campaign, I was open about my background as a Palestinian from Gaza and how my identity and family history shaped my understanding of the importance of representation and debate. However, this openness was quickly used as a basis for sustained attempts to discredit me.


Unfounded Accusations and Smear Campaigns


Instead of engaging with my declared platform or my achievements, the initial reports in the media questioned my suitability for the role solely based on my identity. The objective was clear: to portray me as a radical, an extremist, with a questionable character. These reports did not appear in isolation; they were part of a broader smear campaign accompanied by false rumors.


Impact on Students


False rumors began to circulate claiming that students who supported me could face consequences such as visa loss or being placed on security watchlists. No evidence was provided to support these claims. I was shocked at how quickly some reputable publications adopted these narratives without minimal fact-checking.


Another Attack on My Identity
