Sydney Increases Police Presence for New Year Celebrations

The police have mobilized thousands of armed officers to patrol the streets of Sydney in light of the New Year celebrations, marking a rare and unusual scene in Australia following the tragic attack at Bondi Beach. In the wake of the attack that targeted the Jewish community of Australia on December 14, which resulted in 15 deaths at a Hanukkah festival, security measures have been intensified, with some officers authorized to carry high-caliber firearms.

New South Wales (NSW) police announced that over 2,500 officers will be on duty during the festivities. The official New Year celebrations were paused at 11:00 PM (12:00 GMT) for a moment of silence in memory of the attack victims, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge illuminated in white light symbolizing peace. Premier Chris Minns warned that some individuals might find the sight "confronting," but emphasized that community safety is a priority.

Despite the recent tragedy, Minns encouraged Sydney residents not to let this "horrific terrorist event" affect their way of life, urging them to "show defiance" and celebrate the New Year. Hours before the countdown, hundreds of thousands of people headed to the harbor, with many official viewing areas already full by the afternoon. The waters were filled with boats, famous for viewing the midnight fireworks. Sydney’s celebrations, with their spectacular fireworks, begin a series of similar events in cities such as Dubai, London, and New York.
