A Violent Incident Outside the Congress in Honduras

A Honduran lawmaker was injured when an unidentified assailant threw an explosive device in the courtyard of the legislature, where members of the conservative National Party were holding a press conference. "The National Party of Honduras condemns all acts of political violence that threaten the life, integrity, and democratic institutions of the country," the party stated in a declaration.

The incident highlights the tense political climate in Honduras following a highly contested electoral competition on November 30, which culminated in a prolonged electoral process with disputed results. The National Party candidate, Nasry Asfura, was declared the winner, but this result has not been accepted by the LIBRE Party, which claims irregularities.

Gladis Aurora Lopez, a conservative deputy from La Paz, was injured in the incident. Videos circulated on social media show a smoking gray object striking close to her head. Although she fell to the ground, her injuries were not considered life-threatening. A photo posted by the leader of the National Party’s parliamentary group shows bloodstains and bruises on her body.

Another conservative lawmaker condemned the attack, stating, "Those who promote hate and intimidation attack democracy." He accused leaders of the LIBRE Party, including Congress President Luis Redondo, of being responsible for the violence in the country. Meanwhile, rhetoric between the major parties has been extremely heated in recent months amid scandals surrounding the electoral period.

This incident occurs in an environment of political tension, with allegations of fraud and irregularities during the electoral process, as Asfura is set to be sworn in on January 27, marking a return to leadership for the National Party after four years of leftist governance.
