Incident in the Gulf of Finland

The police in Finland have detained a ship traveling from Russia, suspected of damaging an undersea telecommunications cable that connects Helsinki to Estonia. The cargo vessel, Fitburg, was en route from St. Petersburg to the port of Haifa in Israel, flying the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

All 14 crew members were arrested after the cable, owned by Finnish telecommunications operator Elisa, was found to have sustained damage. The operator stated that the damage "did not affect the functionality of Elisa's services in any way" and that services had been redirected.

In recent years, the Baltic Sea has witnessed numerous incidents in which undersea cables have been damaged or completely severed, with many experts and political leaders considering these incidents part of a "hybrid war" waged by Russia against Western countries, a theme intensified following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The police are investigating "aggravated disturbance of telecommunications" and "aggravated sabotage and attempted aggravated sabotage." The detained crew members hail from Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

Undersea cables are essential for transmitting electricity and data between countries, keeping people connected to the internet. Finnish authorities acted swiftly, sending a helicopter and a patrol vessel to the area, where they discovered the ship anchored at sea.

Finland's President Alexander Stubb remarked, "Finland is prepared for security challenges of various types, and we will respond as necessary." The incident has raised questions in local media about possible involvement from another country, and the police chief, Ilkka Koskimäki, stated that "the police or other authorities do not speculate on these matters."
