Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian Promises Economic Changes

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced that his government is "ready to listen to the people" after two weeks of increasingly violent national demonstrations. In a televised interview, Pezeshkian took a conciliatory approach, committing to address the country's economic issues while blaming the United States and Israel for inciting unrest.

The crisis erupted after the Iranian currency experienced a significant decline in December, leading to mass protests against rising living costs and inflation. These protests have increasingly taken on political and anti-government tones. The President urged Iranians to distance themselves from what he termed "violent protesters and terrorists."

"People have concerns. We must discuss with them and, if it is our duty, resolve their problems," said Pezeshkian. "But the more important duty is to not allow a group of protesters to destroy the entire society."

Iranian officials have acknowledged that public anger is justified, given the "rising prices, high inflation, and drastic devaluation of the local currency, which puts enormous pressure on citizens." During the protests, reports indicate 109 deaths among security personnel.

In a related statement, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf emphasized that Iran recognizes the "peaceful protests of the people" but will take action against "terrorists." The Interior Minister stated that the unrest is waning, while the Attorney General warned that participants could face the death penalty. An internet blackout persisted for over 60 hours, and human rights organizations have reported at least 51 protesters killed by security forces.
