The Importance of Background Checks

Many business owners perceive background checks as unnecessary expenses; however, the cost is minimal compared to the legal and reputational damage caused by problematic hires. From verifying educational diplomas to uncovering criminal convictions, thorough screening is the only way to ensure that a candidate is truly who they claim to be.

When implementing an effective background check program, it is crucial to define clear parameters, identify the necessary verifiable information, and inform candidates or employees about the types of checks that will be conducted. Trust is an essential aspect of human nature, but when discovering that an employee has withheld critical information, such as a criminal conviction, the repercussions can far outweigh their contributions to the company.

About 12 years ago, I witnessed a similar situation. A person applied for a position in our company but failed to disclose a prior conviction. Although I firmly believe in conducting thorough checks, the tools available today did not exist at that time. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the hiring process is transparent and well-regulated.
