Military Collaboration Between Pakistan and Bangladesh

Islamabad, Pakistan – Less than a week into the new year, following a meeting between Pakistan’s Chief of Air Staff, Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Hasan Mahmood Khan, the Pakistani military has announced that a deal for the sale of domestically produced JF-17 Thunder fighter jets could be imminent. A statement from the military's press office (ISPR) noted that Khan praised the combat record of the Pakistan Air Force and sought assistance to support the 'aging' fleet of the Bangladesh Air Force and integrate air defense radar systems to enhance aerial surveillance.

In addition to a promise for expedited delivery of Super Mushshak training aircraft, the statement added that "detailed discussions have also been held regarding the possibility of acquiring JF-17 Thunder aircraft." This initiative comes at a time when Pakistan is closely collaborating with Saudi Arabia to convert loans of approximately $2 billion into agreements for JF-17 aircraft, thereby strengthening military cooperation between the long-time allies.

It was recently reported that Pakistan has finalized a $4 billion deal with a rebel faction in Libya, including the sale of more than a dozen JF-17 Thunder jets. Although the Pakistani military has not officially confirmed any agreements with Libya or Saudi Arabia, analyses suggest that events in 2025 have increased the appeal of the JF-17. The relatively low price of the aircraft, estimated between $25 million and $30 million, has led several countries, such as Nigeria and Azerbaijan, to express interest over the past decade.

The JF-17 Thunder, a lightweight fighter jet developed jointly by Pakistan and China, was designed to replace Pakistan's aging fleet and is an integral part of its air forces. Although the JF-17 lacks stealth capabilities, it offers good maneuverability at medium and low altitudes, combining firepower, agility, and survivability, thus becoming "a potent platform for any air force."

With an increasing number of countries interested in acquiring JF-17 aircraft, Pakistan is gearing up to capitalize on this opportunity and expand its influence in the international defense market.
