Nigeria Advances to AFCON Quarterfinals

Victor Osimhen scored twice, leading Nigeria to a resounding 4-0 victory against Mozambique, securing their place in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Ademola Lookman, a former winner of the African Footballer of the Year award, opened the scoring after just 20 minutes of play in Fes, providing assists for the other three goals of the match.

Osimhen started the game without his characteristic mask but returned to wearing the accessory before netting his second goal in the 25th minute. He then scored again immediately after halftime, before Akor Adams capped the match with the fourth goal. This marked the largest victory ever recorded by a team in the knockout stages of AFCON since Egypt's 4-0 defeat of Algeria in the semifinals in 2010.

The Super Eagles, looking to make amends for their failure to qualify for the World Cup, are now set to face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo in Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup in Marrakech.

Mozambique reached the knockout stage of AFCON for the first time after advancing as one of the best third-placed teams. Although they performed well in the group stage, they were unable to compete against a transformed Nigerian side following their earlier victory over Uganda. Lookman, who was reinstated into the starting eleven, showcased his remarkable talent, both scoring and assisting during the match.
