Return of Mining Hardware

In recent years, cryptocurrency mining has faded from prominence for various reasons. Partially due to its never being truly useful outside of being a speculative investment and partly because other speculative investments have become more popular. Now, all sorts of older mining hardware are available at attractive prices. One example is the Asrock AMD BC250, which is essentially a simplified version of the Playstation 5, equipped with nearly everything a gaming PC needs to run Steam. [ETA PRIME] demonstrates how to set up this system.

System Setup and Performance

The initial setup involves powering up the computer, installing an SSD, and adding a cooler. This is fairly straightforward, considering it is designed to be rack-mounted. Once powered, some BIOS modifications are necessary, primarily related to memory management. [ETA PRIME] uses Bazzite as the operating system, which facilitates smooth gaming performance. The system can run modern games and even AAA titles at reasonable resolutions and frame rates almost immediately, which should not be surprising given that this APU features a six-core Zen 2 processor and a fairly powerful RDNA2 graphics unit, all on a single board.

Pricing and Alternatives

It is worth noting that this setup is a few weeks old, and the video has become so popular that BC250 boards, which [ETA PRIME] found for $100, are now reported to be much more expensive. Even so, even at double or triple the price, it could still be an attractive option for a compact and fun computer that allows for relatively easy gaming and resembles the concept of a Steam Machine. There are many other setups based on older mining hardware, so do not limit yourself to this popular piece of hardware.
