NASA has released groundbreaking new data on Enceladus, Saturn’s icy moon, confirming the presence of a massive underground ocean far larger than previously believed. Before ending its mission, the Cassini spacecraft detected traces of phosphorus and complex organic molecules in the plumes erupting from the moon’s south pole.

Scientists now call Enceladus “one of the strongest candidates for extraterrestrial life in our Solar System.” The subsurface ocean, heated by tidal forces from Saturn, may offer conditions similar to Earth’s deep-sea hydrothermal vents — ecosystems that thrive in complete darkness.

NASA is currently planning a new mission, the Enceladus Orbilander, scheduled for launch in 2038. The spacecraft will directly sample the plumes and search for biological signatures. Astrobiologists say this discovery marks the beginning of a new era: the search for life in the hidden oceans of icy worlds.
