Mali and Burkina Faso Respond with Reciprocal Measures

Mali and Burkina Faso have announced travel bans for American citizens in retaliation to similar actions taken by the Donald Trump administration. These two West African nations have recently enforced complete entry restrictions following the extension of the travel ban imposed by the U.S. President.

In separate statements, officials from both countries confirmed that they would implement matching measures for American citizens. Burkina Faso's Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, emphasized that his government is acting on the principle of "reciprocity," while Mali's Foreign Ministry called for "mutual respect and sovereign equality." They expressed regret over the United States' decision, underscoring that "such a significant decision was made without any prior consultation."

The decision from Mali and Burkina Faso comes just days after neighboring Niger announced a similar travel ban for American citizens. All three countries are governed by a military junta that has taken power through coups and are increasingly turning towards Russia as relations with other West African states and Western powers have deteriorated.

Earlier this month, the White House announced that it would impose total entry restrictions for individuals from the three countries, as well as from South Sudan, Syria, and those holding passports from the Palestinian Authority. These measures are set to take effect on January 1 and are aimed at "protecting U.S. security."
