Interim Leader of Venezuela Restructures Presidential Guard Leadership

Delcy Rodríguez, the newly appointed interim president of Venezuela, has dismissed General Javier Marcano Tábata, the head of the presidential guard, just days after Nicolás Maduro was captured by U.S. forces during a raid in Caracas. This operation resulted in Maduro's extradition to New York, where he faces charges of narco-terrorism.

The presidential guard is responsible for protecting the president. Although the Venezuelan government has not provided details about potential casualties, it is believed that members of the guard may be among those who died in the American operation to capture Maduro. The dismissal of General Marcano was signed by Rodríguez, who was appointed interim president by the National Assembly, controlled by government supporters.

Rodríguez, known to be close to Maduro, has adopted both a provocative and conciliatory tone, focusing on cooperation with the United States, despite condemning Maduro's capture as an "illegal kidnapping." Her actions are being closely monitored both within and outside Venezuela to assess how she will manage the country.

The removal of Marcano Tábata is one of the first changes in the interim leadership of the country, given that he was also the commander of the military counterintelligence unit, DGCIM, known for its repression of dissenters. Despite reported severe human rights abuses under the command of DGCIM, it is believed that the general’s dismissal was more a reaction to the guard's failure to protect Maduro during the U.S. raid.

At this moment, security measures and international reactions are crucial for establishing a climate of trust in the new interim government, as the threat of further American intervention looms over Venezuela.
