Greenland Asserts: "Greenland Is Not for Sale"
Greenland Is Not for Sale
A Greenlandic lawmaker has emphasized that Greenland "is not for sale" as U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration officials renew threats to take control of this autonomous Danish territory. Aaja Chemnitz, a member of the Danish parliament representing Greenland, welcomed discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish and Greenlandic officials, expected to take place next week. Chemnitz stated that Greenland's stance on autonomy remains unchanged: "Greenland is not for sale and will never be for sale."
Trump's Threats
Since taking office last January, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to acquire Greenland, highlighting the island's "strategic" importance in the Arctic region. "We need Greenland from a national security perspective. It is so strategic. Currently, Greenland is covered by Russian and Chinese ships everywhere," said the American president. However, Trump's pressure has drawn strong criticism from Greenland, Denmark, the European Union, and other major U.S. allies, including Canada.
Compromise and Diplomacy
The foreign ministers of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden reiterated their commitment to "preserve security, stability, and cooperation in the Arctic." "Security in the Arctic is based on respect for the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law," they stated in a joint declaration.
