Another Serious Incident in the Skiing World

Katharina Liensberger, the silver medalist in slalom at the 2022 Olympics, will miss the opportunity to compete at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina after suffering a severe knee injury during training. The Austrian Ski Federation announced that Liensberger will undergo surgery on Friday, following medical examinations that confirmed a fracture of the tibial plateau, a torn meniscus, and damage to the medial collateral ligament in her right knee.

Her Season Ends Prematurely

According to Austrian media, the season for the 28-year-old slalom specialist has ended due to this accident that occurred in St. Michael, just one month before the Olympics in Italy. Liensberger had previously won a team gold medal and a silver medal in slalom at Beijing, and she was the slalom world champion in 2021. She also earned a bronze medal at last year's championship held at home in Saalbach.

Intense Competition Ahead

In Cortina, Liensberger was set to compete against the renowned American skier Mikaela Shiffrin, the most successful skier in World Cup history, who has won the last six slaloms and five this season. This weekend, skiers will compete in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, with a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom on Sunday. Liensberger joins the list of top skiers who have suffered severe accidents before the Olympics, alongside three Swiss Olympic champions—Michelle Gisin, Lara Gut-Behrami, and Corinne Suter—who have also been sidelined due to injuries.

Safety Concerns in Skiing

Following the death of Italian skier Matteo Franzoso, which occurred due to a training accident in Chile last September, concerns regarding risk mitigation in this high-speed sport have intensified. Mikaela Shiffrin emphasized this issue at the beginning of the Olympic ski season, stating: "Often we train in conditions where the variables are too many to control, and sometimes you have to decide: is this situation too dangerous?"
