New York Jets player in critical condition after Manhattan shooting

Kris Boyd, a cornerback for the New York Jets, is in critical condition after being shot early Sunday morning, according to US media reports. The New York Police Department confirmed that a 29-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and a Jets spokesperson later confirmed to the BBC that the victim was Boyd.

The shooting occurred at approximately 2:00 local time (07:00 GMT) in midtown Manhattan, following a 911 emergency call reporting gunfire. Officers arrived at the scene outside the upscale restaurant Sei Less, where they found Boyd severely injured. He was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The NYPD said the investigation remains active and no suspects are currently in custody.

“We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will not be commenting further at this time,” a Jets spokesperson told the BBC.

Before joining the Jets earlier this year, Boyd spent two seasons with the Houston Texans, one season with the Arizona Cardinals, and four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. At the time of the incident, he was on injured reserve after sustaining a shoulder injury during practice in August.

Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson posted a message on X calling for prayers for his teammate: “Lord, please place Your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety. Please get him through this.”

Fans have also flooded social media with messages of support, expressing shock and concern.

The shooting has raised renewed attention on gun violence in major US cities. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine how the incident unfolded.

For now, the Jets organisation remains focused on Boyd’s recovery, offering no further comments until more information is available. Teammates describe him as a dedicated athlete and valued presence in the locker room, with a promising career ahead of him.
