The Fascinating History of Graphics Controllers

The use of computers with high-resolution color graphical interfaces has become commonplace today; however, it took significant effort and ingenuity to reach this point. This extensive history is the subject of the article series "The Graphics Chip Chronicles" written by Dr. Jon Peddie. The first of the eight volumes discusses the early days of the NEC µPD7220 and the development of the IBM PC.

Chips like the NEC µPD7220 were integral to the PC-9800 series of computers in Japan, renowned for the art and creative games they enabled. While Hackaday readers are familiar with the IBM side of things, graphics controllers from Texas Instruments, including the TMS34010 and its successor TMS34020, are considered the first Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), equipped with specific graphics instructions.

It may be tempting to view computer graphics as a straightforward evolution from monochrome graphics controllers to the advanced systems we currently use in our PCs, yet many talented companies and individuals have been involved, including those who created clones that established new standards. If you are passionate about computer history, this series is definitely worth a read.
