Devastating Floods Displace Families in Indonesia
Catastrophic Floods in Aceh Tamiang
Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia – Rahmadani and her nine-year-old son, Dimas, lost their home when devastating floods destroyed their rented house. Initially, after the disaster, they sought refuge by the roadside, but after three weeks, they moved into a tent just a few meters from their ruined home.
The floods in December have claimed the lives of at least 1,170 people in the North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh provinces. Many displaced victims continue to shelter in temporary tents, with Aceh emerging as the most affected region.
Rahmadani is worried about her son's health. Dimas, who suffered an injury in childhood, cannot walk or talk. "Before the floods, I always took him to the doctor, and now we have no way to go. Even though we receive aid, it is only food," she stated.
Massiani lives with her extended family in a tent, sharing the space with 14 people. She is grateful to have received a tent after sleeping under plastic for several days, but she noted that there are no toilets nearby and the conditions are unsanitary.
The names of those affected continue to rise, and many report not receiving the necessary support. "We exist like beggars, waiting for aid just to be able to eat," claims Nuraini, who lost her parents' home.
Environmental groups emphasize that deforestation in Sumatra has made communities more vulnerable to severe natural disasters.
Juliette Apin, who has run a furniture store in Aceh Tamiang since 1993, reported severe losses. "Our products are destroyed, and the losses amount to hundreds of millions of rupiah," she said.
Flooding and landslides constitute the worst disaster in Indonesia since the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi in 2018, affecting nearly 40,000 homes. Residents of Aceh Tamiang feel like they are starting over, hoping for relocation as temporary housing units are under construction.
They have reported cases of deteriorating health among children, many of whom are suffering from severe coughs.
