Uncertainty Surrounds Venezuela's Future After Maduro's Capture

Many who watched U.S. President Donald Trump's press conference on Saturday anticipated dramatic details about how American forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a raid early that morning. However, a surprising moment came when Trump announced that, with Maduro in custody, the United States would "lead" Venezuela "until we can make a safe, fair, and just transition."

In another unexpected development, he added that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has discussed the situation with Maduro's Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, who, according to Trump, is "willing to do what we think is necessary to make Venezuela a great country again."

However, Rodríguez appeared less cooperative in her subsequent press conference, denouncing Maduro's detention as a kidnapping and emphasizing that Venezuela would not become a colony.

In this context, many are left wondering who is now in charge of Venezuela. According to Venezuelan law, it is the prerogative of the Vice President to assume leadership in the president's absence. Thus, the Supreme Court of Venezuela's decision to declare Delcy Rodríguez as interim president seems like a logical step.

Nevertheless, observers in Venezuela expected that the immediate aftermath of an American intervention would unfold differently, given that the U.S. and many other nations have not recognized Maduro as the legitimate president, denouncing the 2024 elections as fraudulent.

Edmundo González, a little-known diplomat, was chosen by the opposition following a situation where María Corina Machado was prevented from running a few months earlier. Over the last 18 months, they have urged Maduro to step down and sought international support, particularly from the United States.

However, Trump surprised journalists by stating that Machado does not have the "support or respect" necessary to lead the country. He added that his team has not spoken with Machado, but Rubio has been in contact with Rodríguez. Therefore, the political future of Venezuela remains uncertain, with Rodríguez caught between responding to U.S. demands and maintaining the loyalty of Maduro's supporters.
