Elon Musk Changes Iranian Flag Emoji Amid Protests
Symbolic Change of the Iranian Flag
In the midst of intense protests in Iran, Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has weighed in on public debate. On January 4, he responded to a message from Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, suggesting in Farsi that Khamenei is delusional. Then, on January 7, his social media platform, X, changed the Iranian flag emoji from the one used since 1979 to the pre-revolutionary flag featuring a lion and sun. Some individuals within Iran and abroad have utilized the pre-1979 flag as a symbol of protest against the current regime.
Context of the Protests
The protests in Iran began on December 28 due to rising inflation. They have spread to over 100 cities and are taking place across all provinces. "The protests target the core of the state and governance, as the policies implemented have not worked for the protesters," stated Negar Mortazavi, a senior researcher at the Center for International Policy.
International Reaction
In this tense climate, Musk continues to provide internet access through his Starlink service, despite the regime's attempts to block signals. This technological intervention has been crucial in facilitating communication amidst restrictions, and many experts emphasize that symbolic changes, such as the flag modification, have a limited impact.
